The OverUnity Dynamic Drive is the debut pedal from UME, a maker out of Australia. It is a hand-built, analog overdrive-with-boost, meaning it combines an overdrive stage with a second switchable boost stage for soloing1. As a first release, it is also the pedal that introduced the UME name.
The maker's stated design goal, quoted by Delicious Audio, is that the pedal is "designed to enhance your natural playing style by allowing for both greater dynamic expression and improved tone."1
Modes and EQ
The pedal splits its controls between its two stages:
- Drive side: a Vintage/Modern mode switch shapes the character of the overdrive1
- Boost side: Brit/Flat flavored boost options, a choice between a voiced and an uncolored boost1
- EQ: High and Low EQ knobs for further tonal tweaking1
The Vintage/Modern switch and the Brit/Flat boost options give the pedal its flexibility, and the High and Low EQ knobs sit on top of both, letting players dial the pedal in around their own amp and guitar1.
An original circuit
Delicious Audio notes that the OverUnity Dynamic Drive "features an original circuit (file under the rare #notaclone tag!)"1. For players weighing it against the many boost and overdrive pedals built on familiar circuits, that is the pedal's distinguishing point: it is not a copy of an existing design.
