The Ultraphonix OD is an overdrive stompbox from Vertex, launched in July 2018. Guitar.com described it as "a 100% analog dirt box," and the maker engineered it to recreate the sound of the Dumble Overdrive Special amp, the famed D-style amplifier. Vertex contends the pedal is able to "accurately re-create the iconic D-style tone."1 For players curious about the wider category, see Overdrive Pedals.
Controls
The pedal keeps things simple with three controls1:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Volume | Sets the pedal's output level |
| Filter | Shapes the tone |
| Gain | Sets the amount of drive |
Design
The Ultraphonix OD is built as a rugged unit, and its faceplate carries the same font stylings as the iconic amplifier it is modeled on, a visual nod players of D-style amps will recognize.1
What it does for your sound
As an analog overdrive, the pedal sits in the same family as other Dumble-inspired drives, aiming to put the Overdrive Special's gain character on a pedalboard rather than relying on the amplifier itself. Guitar.com reported the maker's claim that it can "accurately re-create the iconic D-style tone."1 Players comparing it with other dirt pedals may also find the Distortion Pedals and Fuzz Pedals pages useful for placing an overdrive among its alternatives.
