The Expressor is a compressor pedal from Volta Custom, an Italian builder of hand-made effects. It is an analog circuit, and Volta Custom describes it as "A Studio Compressor, put in a box", meaning it takes the kind of compression used in recording studios and puts it in a standard pedal format for a board. It runs on 9V DC, center negative, like most pedals1.
What it does
As a compressor, the Expressor evens out the difference between loud and quiet notes, which is the same job any pedal in the Compressor Pedals family does. What Volta Custom says sets it apart is how it behaves at high settings: the maker describes it as "Silent even at high compressions", so the noise floor stays low even when the circuit is working hard1.
RockBoard's PedalPedia describes the range of the sound as running "from transparent with details in evidence, to the most pronounced 'squish', a robust dose of caffeine for the sound"1. In plain terms, that means the pedal can be set two ways: lightly, so it evens things out while leaving the character of your playing and your guitar intact, or harder, for the compressed, sustained feel players call squish.
