The Voltic Mountain Drive is the first overdrive from Voltic Electronic Devices, announced as a new pedal on Delicious Audio in May 20261. Delicious Audio's Brent P. Gladless describes it as a pedal that "does the transparent thing, but it's not afraid to get its hands dirty"1. It arrives in a blue sparkle, rugged enclosure1.
The tone control
The Mountain Drive's tone knob works in two distinct stages as it turns1:
- First two-thirds of rotation: "a standard low-pass filter. Roll off the highs, get warm, get cozy"1
- Last third of rotation: "It activates a bypass cap that adds a quasi gain stage while cutting bass"1
That last third changes the pedal's character noticeably. In the maker's description as quoted by Delicious Audio, "Suddenly you've got a treble booster on your hands. Piercing. Cutting. Nasty."1 In practice, a player can use the tone knob as a second gain control: below the switch point it behaves like a conventional warm overdrive, and above it the pedal leans toward treble booster territory, cutting bass as it adds that extra stage.
What reviewers said
Delicious Audio's demo impressions came from Brent P. Gladless, who wrote: "I can push a cranked JCM into feedback territory, or turn a clean Fender into something that sounds like it's been drinking"1. That suggests the pedal covers a wide range depending on the amp it feeds, from pushing an already cranked Marshall-style amp over the edge to adding grit to a clean Fender-style amp.
