Kai Tachibana is a Hamburg-based engineer who designs overdrive pedals rather than performs on them. He is the original designer of the Nobels ODR-1 and the ODR-S, and he now designs pedals under his own brand, Nordland Electronics, including the ODR-C-30A, the ODR-CS Custom Special and the MT-11 Mosland12.
From No1 Retail repairman to Hamburg engineer
Tachibana's working life in the music business began in repair. Nobels founder Bernhard Kurzke says Tachibana was his employee for 24 years, starting in the early 1980s as one of the first repairmen at No1 Retail, and that he later made his Master at Hamburg University7.
"Kai Tachibana was my employee for 24 years. He started in the early 80's."
That Pedal Show's presenters, Mick Taylor and Daniel Steinhardt, describe him as a Hamburg-based engineer, and tell the story behind his best-known circuit: he had an old Fender Bassman whose cranked sound he loved, along with the way the guitar interacted with the amp through the volume control, and he wanted an overdrive pedal that reacted the same way3.
Designer of the Nobels ODR-1
By 1993 the ODR-1 was real. In Sweetwater's demo video, Don Carr says the pedal "became a secret weapon of sorts for a lot of pro players especially in Nashville," and that although its green color leads many to assume it is like the other green overdrive, the two do not have much in common beyond color, the most obvious difference being the EQ4.
"German engineer Kai tachibana wanted to emulate the sound feel and response of his old Fender baseman in a pedal he used a few unique circuit Design Elements to get there and by 1993 the odr-1 was real"
Guitar World's reviewer Trevor Curwen gives another piece of the design story: the ODR-1 came about because Tachibana was not keen on the strong middle hump featured by the Ibanez and other overdrives of the time8. The pedal's most distinctive control is also his work. Nobels' Michael Sanmann credits him with developing "the unique double filter control called Spectrum," which controls the lows and highs54.
Nordland Electronics and the ODR circuit today
In 2019 Tachibana revisited the ODR-1 and updated it with new features under his own Nordland brand6. Aion FX, which has traced his circuits, describes him as "the talented designer of one of the best overdrive circuits ever made"9. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson calls him "the original creator of the Nobels ODR-1" and notes he has further evolved that circuit for his own brand10.
His Nordland releases so far:
| Pedal | Year | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| ODR-C | 2019 onward | Built on his original Nobels ODR-1 circuit, with Nordland saying it uses superior wiring and premium components to refine it611 |
| ODR-CS Custom Special | 2023 | Revives and evolves his 1993 Nobels ODR-S, in honor of the original pedal's 30th anniversary1 |
| MT-11 Mosland | 2024 | His take on the Ibanez Mostortion2 |
Tachibana's White 30th Anniversary Edition is now sold out. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson rated it "the very best of the ODR-1 format" in his opinion12.
Questions
Who designed the Nobels ODR-1?
Kai Tachibana, a German engineer who worked for Nobels founder Bernhard Kurzke for 24 years, starting in the early 1980s as one of the first repairmen at No1 Retail. He designed the ODR-1, which was finished by 1993, along with its distinctive Spectrum control and the later ODR-S.
What is the difference between the ODR-1 and ODR-S?
Both are overdrive pedals and both were designed by Kai Tachibana, with the ODR-S following the ODR-1 in 1993. In 2023 he revived and evolved the ODR-S circuit as the Nordland ODR-CS Custom Special under his own company, Nordland Electronics, in honor of the original pedal's 30th anniversary.
Who is Kai Tachibana?
A Hamburg-based engineer and pedal designer. He was an employee of Bernhard Kurzke at No1 Retail for 24 years, made his Master at Hamburg University, designed the Nobels ODR-1 and ODR-S, and now designs pedals including the ODR-C-30A, ODR-CS and MT-11 Mosland for his own Nordland Electronics brand.
Where is Kai Tachibana based?
Hamburg, Germany. He studied at Hamburg University, where he made his Master, and he is described as a Hamburg-based engineer by That Pedal Show's presenters when telling the story of the ODR-1's design.
