12AX7

The 12AX7 is a dual-triode vacuum tube, equivalent to the ECC83 and 7025, that is the highest-gain tube in common use at 100% gain¹. It appears in amplifier preamps and in tube-driven pedals such as overdrives, distortion pedals, and preamps²³⁴. In amplifiers, a cranked 12AX7 preamp pushed by an overdrive is a sound some pedals aim to recreate at low volumes⁵⁶. In pedals, it can deliver warm, fat, crunchy, and rich tones, classic tube growl with fatness and sustain, or clean sounds with good headroom that can be pushed into sweet tube harmonic overdrive⁷⁸⁹. It is also used in preamps based on Dumble-style amp designs¹⁰¹¹.
