Glossary

decay

In delays and reverbs, it describes how repeats or ambience fade, as in the Ibanez AD9's notes decaying into one another1, the Dispatch Master's exceptionally natural decay2, and the Keeley Loomer's Hall mode, where decay sets the reverb time3. Some pedals offer decay controls, such as the Boss NS-2, whose threshold and decay controls shape suppression4, and the Pigtronix Gloamer, which alters attack and decay time of any sound source5. Sources also use decay to describe how fuzz and overdrive notes fall apart or change character as they fade, such as "splatty" behavior in the Colorsound Overdriver6 and the gritty, fuzzy note decay of the Lemon Drop7.
