Glossary
germanium
Germanium transistors tend to sound warmer, or even woolier, than silicon, which is brighter and more precise1. Germanium versions of circuits are described as a little looser and darker sounding than their silicon counterparts2. The material appears in fuzz pedals such as the Fuzz Face and Octavia-style designs3, and in boosters and overdrives, sometimes paired with silicon or JFET components for extra versatility456. Germanium diodes are also used for clipping, offering a different character than silicon7. Germanium circuits are traditionally sensitive to temperature, which some modern designs aim to overcome while keeping the warmth89.
