MIDI

MIDI is the universal language that allows electronic music instruments, computers and audio devices to communicate with each other1. It runs parallel to the audio signal, never touching the sound itself, and only sends commands that devices such as DSP pedals, rack gear, and stage lights respond to instantly2. On a guitar rig, MIDI is used for switching effects on and off, calling up presets on MIDI-enabled effects, synchronizing time-based effects, and using MIDI expression pedals on effects3. Many pedals offer MIDI control of their functions, from complete control of every knob on the Pigtronix Echolution 24 to full MIDI integration in pedals like the Darkglass Alpha·Omega Photon5. MIDI controllers and modules, such as foot controllers and MIDI-controlled loopers, handle switching and preset changes across a pedalboard67.
