octave fuzz

Octave fuzz is a type of fuzz effect that folds the waveform over itself and touches it to itself again, creating an octave that sounds like it is 12 frets above where you are playing on the guitar1. The circuit type started in the late sixties with the Octavia Fuzz1, and the effect is considered quintessentially retro, having helped soundtrack the nascent boom of classic rock in the late 60s2. Its sound is often described as violent and unique among fuzz effects1, and some pedals, such as the Ampeg Scrambler, are known for a huge upper-octave fuzz sound3.
