phantom power
Phantom power is DC voltage delivered over an audio cable, typically +48V through an XLR connection, that can power a device or pass through to another one12. Some pedals, like the Aguilar Tone Hammer and Tech 21 SansAmp models, can be powered by phantom power from the house PA or a mixing console as an alternative to batteries or a DC supply34. Phantom power can also travel over MIDI cables, as with the RJM Mini Effect Gizmo and ENGL Z-1256. Because console phantom power can damage or degrade the sound of effects pedal outputs, some interface devices use transformer isolation to keep it from reaching them7.
