Glossary
ratio
In guitar effects, ratio is a comparison between two quantities, and the term appears in several distinct contexts. In compressors, ratio sets how much gain reduction is applied, with settings such as 8:1 or a maximum of 10:1, and backing off the ratio can take a pedal from heavy squash to subtle sustain12. Ratio also describes wet to dry balance in echo effects3, fuzz to distortion blending4, and signal-to-noise ratio, a measure of desired signal against noise567. Delay pedals use golden ratio timing between repeats89, and a JFET stage can be biased for a specific THD ratio10.
