SMD

SMD stands for surface mount device, a type of component packaging used on printed circuit boards in effects pedals¹. SMD parts allow more efficient manufacturing, as when Boss redesigned the DD-3 delay onto a double-sided board with SMD components². Some builders and manufacturers distinguish designs using non-SMD components in the audio path from those using SMD parts³.
