stompbox

Sources use the term to describe single-effect pedals covering categories such as modulation¹, compression², overdrive and distortion³,⁴, and preamp-style designs⁵. Stompboxes can model or recreate the tones of amplifiers and studio hardware, such as high-gain tube amps⁶, classic compressor racks⁷, or a Sunn Model T⁸. They come in various formats, including miniature⁹ and multi-effects designs¹⁰, and are typically housed in an enclosure operated at floor level⁵.
