Glossary
surface-mount
Surface-mount refers to electronic components, abbreviated SMD or SMT, that are soldered directly onto a circuit board and take up less space than traditional through-hole components1. It is used for mass production, as with the Klon KTR, which is essentially the same circuit as the Klon Centaur but built on surface-mount production lines23. In pedal circuits, surface-mount parts can include resistors45, transistors such as the MMBT6429, the SMD version of the long-obsolete 2N64296, and silicon diodes used in place of germanium7. Some through-hole pedals provide extra pads so surface-mount JFETs, such as the MMBF5457 or MMBF4393, can be used where through-hole versions are no longer available8910.
