The GR2 Envelope Filter is a pedal from 3Leaf Audio that produces the automatic, dynamic wah-style sweep of an envelope filter: the filter opens and closes in response to how hard you play. Thomas "MarloweDK" Risell, demonstrating it in a video for No Treble in October 2010, called it "a great little pedal that offers a lot of possibilities"1.
Reviewers have received the GR2 well: Premier Guitar called it "a great little pedal that offers a lot of possibilities"1.
What it does
As an envelope filter, the GR2 tracks the attack and volume of your playing and sweeps a filter accordingly, giving the percussive, vowel-like "quack" associated with funk bass and filtered guitar sounds. The depth of the effect depends on picking dynamics: play harder and the filter opens further.
How it was demonstrated
Risell's No Treble test drive used a bass-focused signal chain, which gives an idea of how the pedal sits in a rig1:
- Bass: Sandberg California JJ
- Strings: Dunlop Nickel plated Medium gauge 45-105
- Amp: TC Electronic RH450 with a TC Electronic RS410 cabinet
- Recording: MacBook with an Apogee Duet soundcard into Logic Audio Pro 8, filmed on a Creative Vado HD 3rd generation (video only)1
His verdict on the pedal overall: "This is a great little pedal that offers a lot of possibilities1."
