AMI Effects Rough Cast

The Rough Cast is a boost pedal from AMI Effects, a maker based in France. Its core function is a clean lift: the circuit delivers what Delicious Audio describes as an ultra-transparent, studio quality boost with up to 20dB of clean gain that does not add saturation and maintains the guitar's original dynamics¹. That places it among the straightforward clean lifts covered on the Boost Pedals type page, useful for pushing an amp or raising a quiet signal without changing its character.

What it does

The design goes beyond a plain volume lift. Delicious Audio's page, written by Paolo De Gregorio, credits the circuit's behavior to its topology: a transformer ensuring the output coupling, a supercharged internal power supply, and a pre-gain circuit that adds progressive compression to bring warmth¹.

The pedal's single named control is the Pre knob. Turned up, it progressively adds compression and warmth, and therefore color, to the tone, bringing a smooth harmonic distortion that gradually thickens the guitar sound¹. In practice, that means the Rough Cast can sit at one end of its range as a transparent clean boost and move toward a thicker, colored tone as Pre is advanced.
