The Anarchy Audio Gold Class is an analog pedal described by its maker as "a simple, yet effective tone enhancer, preamplifier and booster"1. It sits in the fuzz, boost, overdrive and distortion family of effects, and it is built around a NOS black glass germanium OC transistor made by Phillips/Mullard at its heart1. RockBoard's PedalPedia says the Gold Class is one of the company's most popular selling pedals1.
What it does
The Gold Class is aimed at tone shaping rather than outright heavy gain. Anarchy Audio's designer JC explained the thinking behind it1:
"Most of the Early AA pedals were associated with heavy metal or punk distortion, but for a long time, id been lusting for a glassy clean/not clean/verge of breakup tone"
That places it as a pedal for players chasing clean-to-edge-of-breakup sounds, with the germanium transistor doing the work at the core of the circuit. Germanium-based designs are a different branch of the family from the silicon circuits found in most modern fuzz pedals, and the Gold Class's coverage of boost, overdrive and distortion roles in one box reflects that tone-enhancer approach. It can also be read alongside the brand's preamp pedals and boost pedals, since the maker describes it as all three1.
Power and practical notes
The Gold Class runs on 9V DC, center negative, and draws 10 mA1. That low draw means it sits comfortably on a pedalboard with a standard supply.
The Gold Class is an analog circuit, so it does not need the higher current or special supplies that some digital pedals ask for. A standard 9V DC center negative output at 10 mA covers it1.
