Anasounds Phase Lag Organic Phaser

The Anasounds Phase Lag is a phaser pedal from the French maker Anasounds. Anasounds describes it as an "organic, psychedelic, atmospheric phaser", and the modulation is 100% analog, using OTA (operational transconductance amplifier) technology, which the maker says allows "not only a beautiful sound rendering but also a great effect".¹ It belongs to the wider family of phaser pedals, effects that sweep notches through a signal's frequency spectrum to produce that familiar swirling, jet-like movement.

Discontinued status

The pedal is no longer in regular production. Anasounds' own product page carries the notice "DISCONTINUED PRODUCT. ON SALE WHILE STOCKS LAST", so remaining units are sold out as the stock runs down.³

B-stock units

Alongside standard units, Anasounds offered the Phase Lag as a B-stock pedal. These are units with "some aesthetic defaults from our manufacturing", sold with the same audio guarantee as a regular pedal.¹ In other words, the circuit is unchanged and the maker stands behind the sound; only the appearance of the enclosure differs.

Design and construction

The Phase Lag departs from the usual metal box: its enclosure is made of bamboo wood.³ The analog signal path uses OTA technology, a long-established approach to phaser design in which the phase-shifting stages are driven by a low-frequency oscillator. Anasounds presents this as the reason for the pedal's sound quality and the depth of the effect.¹

Coverage in the press

Pedal of the Day featured the Phase Lag Organic Phaser, introducing it as "the Phase Lag Organic Phaser effects pedal from Anasounds" and greeting the maker warmly as "our friends at Anasounds".²⁴ The pedal has since been listed by the maker as discontinued, with the notice "DISCONTINUED PRODUCT. ON SALE WHILE STOCKS LAST" on its product page.³
