The Ashdown Bearded Lady is a bass fuzz pedal from Ashdown Engineering, the UK amp and effects maker. Ashdown describes it as "a hugely powerful fuzz pedal that splits the signal into low and high fuzz giving complete control over your tone," and sums up its range as "From subtle clipping to full on nuclear fuzz the Bearded Lady does it all."1 It belongs to the wider family of fuzz pedals and bass pedals.
Controls
The pedal's split design gives three knobs, each covering a different part of the fuzz1:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Lo Fuzz | Controls low end fuzz |
| Hi Fuzz | Controls high end fuzz |
| Hi Out | Controls the Hi frequency fuzz output |
Because the low and high halves of the signal are fuzzed separately, a bass player can set the amount of fuzz under the low strings independently of the top end, then set the level of the high frequency fuzz with Hi Out. Ashdown also notes that "The pedal also features true bypass switching," so the pedal is out of the signal path when off.1
The pedal is "housed in a custom designed steel casing that will stand up to being stomped on night after night," according to Ashdown's product page.1
Where it came from
The Bearded Lady was introduced as part of Ashdown's Dr. Green range. Ashdown Engineering describes it as coming "straight from Dr Greens surgery," a bass fuzz pedal that splits the signal into low and high fuzz for complete control over tone.1 The maker characterizes its range as "from subtle clipping to full on nuclear fuzz."1
Ashdown's Dr. Green Bearded Lady is a bass fuzz pedal, distinct in name from any other fuzz pedal a player might encounter. Its signal-splitting design, with separate Lo Fuzz and Hi Fuzz controls, is the feature the maker emphasizes most.1
