Ashdown Studio Compressor

The Ashdown Studio Compressor is a compressor pedal from UK bass amp and effects maker Ashdown, designed, in the company's words, "with the studio bass player in mind"¹. Like any compressor, it evens out the gaps between a player's loudest and quietest notes: Ashdown describes it as taming "the dynamic range of your signal so that there is less inconsistency between the loudest" notes and the rest of the performance¹. For a bassist, that typically means every note sits at a more even level, whether played with fingers, a pick, or a slap technique.

What it does to your sound

Ashdown frames the pedal around how compressors are used in recording studios: "By nature, studio compressors are widely used for levelling the audio signal, limiting to prevent unwanted distortion and for dynamic range preservation"¹. In practice, that covers three jobs a player might ask of it: holding a consistent level across a take, catching sudden peaks before they distort, and keeping the natural dynamics of the performance intact rather than flattening them entirely. If you are new to compression, the Compressor Pedals page explains the effect type as a whole.

Where it sits among studio-style compressors

The Studio Compressor is one of several pedals that borrow their approach from studio rack compressors. The MXR Studio Compressor is a compressor effects pedal that its maker, MXR, says provides "recording-quality compression with Constant Headroom Technology™ and true bypass switching", with Attack, Release, Ratio, Input, and Output controls for shaping the response from subtle to heavy². The Case Study Effects Studio Compressor is another studio-named compressor, covered in a Pedal of the Day review³. Ashdown's entry is distinguished by its stated focus on the studio bass player specifically¹.
