The Atomic Tone Saturation Tryptic is an analog dirt box that covers a wide stretch of gain territory: mostly an overdrive, but one that also works as a boost, a sagged fuzz and a distortion. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes it as shining as an overdrive/distortion when run at 18v1. It is hand-built by a husband and wife team based in Fresno, California1.

What it does

Atomic Tone positions the Tryptic as a single box that spans several gain types. As De Gregorio puts it, it is "mostly an overdrive but adheres to modern standards by being able to shine also as a boost, sagged fuzz and everything in between"1. Players who would otherwise reach for separate boost, overdrive, distortion or fuzz pedals can cover that ground here, with the voicing toggle and tone filters deciding where in that range the pedal sits.

Controls

ControlWhat it does
SatA duration knob that the Bass and Treble filters interact closely with1
BassA low pass filter placed before the distortion stage1
TrebleA high pass filter placed after the distortion stage1
Voicing toggleSelects the range of voicing, mounted in the center of the pedal1

The Bass and Treble knobs are not a conventional stacked tone stack: one filters lows before the saturation, the other filters highs after it, and both interact closely with the Sat knob1.

The voicing toggle

The toggle in the center of the pedal gives three ranges1:

  • Up: boost to overdrive that goes a little past mild, with modern to thick vintage tone
  • Mid: boost to overdrive with fuzz, delivering what the reviewer calls a TB MKII pro tone at high settings, with tons of tone options in between
  • Down: a mode delivering all sorts of sounds from boost to distortion to fuzz, although it will not do heavy fuzz

The down toggle position reaches fuzz but, as Delicious Audio notes, it will not do heavy fuzz. Players after that territory should look at the mid position or a dedicated fuzz pedal.

Questions

Where is the Atomic Tone Saturation Tryptic made?

It is hand-built by a husband and wife team based in Fresno, California, under the Atomic Tone name. Delicious Audio's product page describes the pedal as an analog dirt box and notes the small-shop, hand-built origin of the unit.

Can the Saturation Tryptic do heavy fuzz?

Not in its down toggle position. Delicious Audio describes that mode as covering everything from boost to distortion to fuzz, but notes it will not do heavy fuzz. The mid position reaches further into fuzz territory, delivering boost to overdrive with fuzz and, at high settings, what the reviewer calls a TB MKII pro tone.

What does the Bass knob do on the Saturation Tryptic?

The Bass knob is a low pass filter placed before the distortion stage, so it shapes how much low end feeds the saturation. It works closely with the Sat knob, which the reviewer describes as a duration control, and with the Treble knob, a high pass filter placed after the distortion.

What does the voicing toggle do?

The toggle switch in the center of the pedal selects the range of voicing. The up position runs from boost to overdrive that goes a little past mild, with modern to thick vintage tone. The mid position covers boost to overdrive with fuzz, and the down position covers boost to distortion to fuzz, though not heavy fuzz.
