The Automat Audio Devices Triplegänger is a three-layer fuzz pedal: two independent fuzz channels running in parallel, with a third Sub circuit underneath that adds octave-down weight. It was announced in June 2025 as one of the first two releases from Automat Audio Devices, a new California-based maker, alongside the Rara Avis. The Triplegänger lists at $350 direct from the maker12.
What it does
The two fuzz channels can be used separately or together, and the Sub circuit adds what Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described as "crushing low-end weight, with options for -1 octave, -2 octaves, or both." Because the three layers run in parallel, the pedal can produce combinations of textures rather than a single fuzz voice, placing it among the more involved entries in the fuzz field1.
Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson, covering the launch, framed it as "more of a 3 layer sound design fuzz" than a conventional single-channel pedal2.
Controls and layout
The pedal's controls break down by channel:
| Section | Controls |
|---|---|
| Fuzz 1 | Level, Fuzz, footswitch |
| Fuzz 2 | Level, Fuzz, footswitch, plus an Options switch with Splatter, Octave and Double voicings |
| Sub | Permanently assigned to Fuzz 1, Fuzz 2 or Both |
The left-hand Options switch sets the voicing of the Fuzz 2 channel among Splatter, Octave or Double settings2. The Sub circuit's assignment is fixed rather than switchable on the fly: it is permanently routed to Fuzz 1, Fuzz 2 or both, and to take it out of the mix you turn its level down2.
The Sub circuit cannot be reassigned while playing. Its routing to Fuzz 1, Fuzz 2 or Both is set internally, so the only way to remove it from the mix is to turn its level down2.
Build and impressions
Both Triplegänger and Rara Avis use custom enclosures with custom milled aluminum knobs rather than stock hardware2. On the interface, Karlsson wrote that "It's an elegant and quickly intuitive interface - which requires a fair amount of experimentation to unearth all the different tones," suggesting the pedal rewards time spent with it2.
