The BBE Boosta Grande is a clean boost pedal that adds up to +20dB of gain without changing the tonal balance of your amp1. Where an overdrive or distortion pedal reshapes your sound, the Boosta Grande is built to do one thing: make what you already have louder. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it plainly: "It's your guitar or bass, but louder"2. The pedal has a single control, a vintage-style Gain knob, and the circuit is analog throughout13.

The trick to staying clean at +20dB is a gentle filter. The pedal mildly rolls off some top end starting at about 1kHz, so when you slam the front end of a tube amp the upper harmonics do not turn shrill4. Vintage Guitar described the same design choice as "rolling off high-end starting at about 1kHz to preserve tonal balance"1.

How it works and how to control it

The Boosta Grande is about as simple as a pedal gets. One knob sets the amount of boost, from a small lift to the full +20dB. There is no tone control, no switch, no second mode. That simplicity is deliberate: the pedal "adds volume without undue coloration or distortion," in BBE's own description21.

Inside, the circuit is a single op-amp non-inverting stage. Josh Scott of JHS Pedals, who covered the pedal in a 2026 history of BBE, put it in perspective5:

"Now this is a single op-amp non-inverting circuit, much like the Micro Amp."
Josh Scott, JHS Pedals5

That topology is the same family as the MXR Micro Amp, one of the earliest clean boost designs. The Boosta Grande also uses 1% metal film resistors for accurate tonal response and a 1meg Ohm input impedance, the same as a quality tube amp, so it does not load down your pickups the way some pedals can2.

Where to put it in your signal chain

Two placements do different jobs, and reviewers have tested both.

  • Into the front of your amp: the +20dB pushes the amp's preamp tubes into breakup, so you get more drive and sustain from the amp itself rather than from the pedal4.
  • In the effects loop: gearnews found it "works beautifully" there, preferably in a serial loop, as a clean solo volume boost that adds volume without adding gain, with just a touch of extra mids to help a lead tone cut through without coloring the underlying tone3.

Because the pedal keeps its low end intact, it also suits bass. Josh Scott of JHS Pedals found exactly that25:

"It keeps all your low end intact, plus it's mega, mega loud if you start turning it up."
Josh Scott, JHS Pedals5

The original and the mini version

The Boosta Grande has appeared in three main forms over its life.

The 2017 MBG-20 mini went further. gearnews called it "a scaled down edition of the original BBE Boosta Grande," with the small format ideal for most players' pedalboards3. MusicRadar reported the Boosta Grande Mini was available now for $1156, while gearnews gave the RRP as $1196; the two figures come from launch coverage a day apart.

The mini MBG-20 has no battery compartment and runs straight off a power supply3. The earlier full-size BBE pedals, including the Boosta Grande, could be powered by a nine-volt battery or their included power supply, and also worked well with third-party multi-unit power supplies7.

What reviewers said

The original Boosta Grande received an award from Guitar Player magazine8. Guitar World's 2007 review of the BBE pedal line, which included the Boosta Grande alongside the Crusher, Green Screamer, Freq Boost, Free Fuzz and Orange Squash, found all six units solidly built, resembling BBE's already released Sonic Stomp and Opto Stomp, and praised that "all feature true bypass, so they don't suck away your tone"7.

Josh Scott's 2026 retrospective for JHS Pedals was positive on the pedal's core job, highlighting the intact low end and sheer volume on tap5. The DIY layout community's interest, with a full stripboard layout published in 2013, is its own kind of endorsement: builders consider the circuit simple and well documented enough to reproduce at home1.

Questions

Is the BBE Boosta Grande true bypass?

Yes. The Boosta Grande uses a true hardwire bypass, so when the effect is off the signal passes completely around the circuit from the input jack to the output jack without loading your guitar. Reviewers have noted this is a properly engineered bypass rather than an afterthought.

What power does the BBE Boosta Grande need?

The pedal runs on 9V DC with a center negative plug and draws 200mA. Earlier full-size BBE pedals could also run on a nine-volt battery or the included power supply, but the mini MBG-20 drops the battery and runs straight off a power supply.

Does the Boosta Grande work for bass?

Yes. BBE describes the pedal as a clean boost for guitar or bass, and Josh Scott of JHS Pedals found it keeps all your low end intact. The gentle high-end rolloff starts around 1kHz, above the fundamental range of most bass notes.

How much boost does the BBE Boosta Grande give?

Up to +20dB of clean gain from its single Gain knob. That is enough to push a tube amp's front end hard or to act as a solo volume boost in an effects loop without adding distortion of its own.

Is the mini Boosta Grande the same circuit as the original?

The mini MBG-20 is a scaled-down edition of the original Boosta Grande with the same +20dB of clean gain and the same single-knob design. When BBE moved the pedal to a smaller box in 2013, the circuit remained the same.

Is the BBE Boosta Grande analog?

Yes. The Boosta Grande is an analog clean boost, built around a single op-amp non-inverting circuit that Josh Scott of JHS Pedals compares to the MXR Micro Amp. It uses 1% metal film resistors for accurate tonal response.
