The Big Tone Music Brewery Golden Pony Overdrive is a discontinued overdrive pedal that takes a Klon-style circuit and adds a full tone-shaping section on top. It was part of the maker's EQ'd Vintage Series, and carried a list price of $2191.
What it does
The Golden Pony is described by Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson as a special take on the Klon circuit. What sets it apart from a straight Klon-style pedal is the tone control layout: like the rest of the EQ'd Vintage Series, it has a 3-Band EQ with semi-parametric Mids, meaning the mid control has its own frequency control, plus voicing options1.
Karlsson's verdict on the circuit is that the combination covers a lot of ground2:
"In any case the smart Tone Stack in tandem with the voicing switch - lets you get about every Klon tone that you would"
Controls
| Control | Function |
|---|---|
| Treble | High-frequency EQ |
| Bass | Low-frequency EQ |
| Mids | Mid-frequency EQ |
| Mids Frequency | Sets the center frequency of the Mids control (semi-parametric) |
| Voicing | Vintage / Smooth switch |
| Level | Output level |
| Gain | Amount of overdrive |
The controls are listed by Guitar Pedal X as "Treble | Bass, Mids | Mids Frequency, Voicing : Vintage / Smooth, Level, Gain"1.
Series and variants
The Golden Pony belonged to Big Tone Music Brewery's EQ'd Vintage Series, a range of fuzz, overdrive and distortion pedals that Karlsson has written about at length, arguing the range is under-appreciated1. A Silver Pony variant also exists, which Karlsson notes is the only one from the range he does not own1.
