The Broughton Audio Fantasm is a digital delay with additional modulation effects in one compact pedal. Broughton Audio describes its range as running "from pristine slapback to eerie long lo-fi delays", adding an extra layer of texture to a player's tone.1
The Fantasm has a list price of US$205.00.1
What it does
The Fantasm's character changes with the delay time. Broughton Audio describes three zones: at short time intervals it can act as a reverb, as the Time is increased it becomes more of a traditional delay, and at longer intervals it creates a spooky echo that gets warmer with each repeat.1 That puts it in the same family as other delay pedals, with the added modulation section covering ground players might otherwise fill with a separate chorus or vibrato style effect.
The controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Time | Delay time between each repeat1 |
| Feedback | How many times your signal repeats1 |
| Level | Overall effect level. Dry tone is always unity; the Level knob adds the effect on top1 |
| Mod Rate | Speed of the modulation1 |
| Mod Level | Effect level of the modulation. At minimum, there is no modulation1 |
The mix arrangement is worth noting for players who run clean tones: the dry signal stays at unity gain no matter where the Level knob sits, and the knob only blends the delayed, modulated effect over the top.1
Power and size
The pedal runs on 9 to 24 volts DC through a standard Boss style connector with center negative polarity, and Broughton Audio notes there is no difference in performance at higher voltages. Current draw is approximately 30 mA.1 The enclosure measures 4.77 inches long by 2.6 inches wide.1
