The Browne ALKENE Nashville Overdrive is a low-gain overdrive pedal from Browne Amplification, the maker behind the Protein Dual Overdrive and the Atom. Browne positions it as a take on the classic "Nashville" overdrives found on the pedalboards of session players, and says it excels at crunchy rhythm tones that retain chord clarity while still delivering singing, expressive lead tones when pushed1.
At its core, the pedal combines what Browne calls musical clipping with gentle, amp-like compression, but with a lowered gain range, restored mid frequencies and a tightened low end for clarity and punch2. Pedal of the Day's reviewer described the design choices the same way: Browne "carefully lowered the overall gain range to make every part of the sweep usable," restored key mid frequencies so it is not overly scooped, and tightened the low end3.
What it does for a thin backline amp
One of the pedal's stated selling points is its ability to transform thin, stiff backline amps by adding the right low mids and just enough sag2. Pedal of the Day's reviewer called it a cure for thin, stiff backline amps overall, and liked the range of options available for dialing in a tone3.
The enclosure is tan, which the same reviewer described as "this tan beauty is sure to turn some heads"3.
The controls
The ALKENE has three knobs and three switches. Browne's suggested starting approach is simple:
- Set the Tone to taste.
- Fade in the desired amount of Gain.
- Try turning the Level up to 2 o'clock as a starting point2.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Level | Sets output volume; Browne suggests around 2 o'clock as a starting point2 |
| Gain | Fades in the desired amount of drive2 |
| Tone | Set to taste2 |
| Clipping switch (external) | Toggles symmetrical and asymmetrical soft clipping2 |
| More Clip switch (internal, top) | Engages an alternate set of hard clipping diodes2 |
| Low Cut switch (internal, bottom) | Rolls off low end to fit the rig1 |
Symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping
The external clipping switch toggles between traditional symmetrical soft clipping and asymmetrical soft clipping. Right is the stock symmetrical setting; left is asymmetrical2. Browne says asymmetrical clipping lets the pedal open up and bloom in a new way, "delivering more punch, a wider feel, and slightly less compression for a more amp-like response"1.
"Asymmetrical clipping allows the Green side to open up and bloom in a new way, delivering more punch, a wider feel, and slightly less compression."
The internal switches
The two internal switches are reached inside the pedal: More Clip at the top and Low Cut at the bottom2.
More Clip (internal, top). Right is the stock setting, left is More Clip. The switch engages an alternate set of hard clipping diodes, which Browne says adds extra bite, aggression, and gain2. Pedal of the Day's review notes the same switch inside, describing it as engaging an alternate set of hard clipping diodes3.
More Clip mode slightly reduces output volume, so the Level control needs to be pushed higher. Browne recommends pairing More Clip with the asymmetrical clipping setting2.
Low Cut (internal, bottom). Right is the stock setting, left enables the Low Cut. The bass cut switch rolls off low end to better fit the rig. Browne says that if a setup already has plenty of low end, this switch tightens things up without thinning the tone1.
Where it came from
Browne describes the ALKENE as inspired by the classic "Nashville" overdrives found on the pedalboards of session greats from Tim Pierce to Jerry McPherson1. Pedal of the Day's review repeats that lineage, calling it inspired by the classic Nashville overdrives found on those session players' pedalboards3. It sits in Browne's overdrive lineup alongside the Protein, the Atom and the Carbon.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day reviewed the ALKENE in March 2026 and was positive about it, calling it "an instant classic" and praising the number of tonal options3:
The Pedal of the Day review is covered in the section above; no verbatim quotation from it is available to reproduce here.
The same review highlighted the lowered gain range, the restored mids and the tightened low end as the changes that make the circuit more flexible than its inspiration3.
