The Catalinbread Ottava Magus II is an octave-up pedal, announced in December 2009 as a refined version of the original Ottava Magus. Catalinbread described it as having "a little more meat, a little less rasp and even more articulate octave up sound" when plugged into a clean amp1. It belongs to the wider family of octave and pitch pedals.
What it does
The pedal produces an octave-up effect, and the II was pitched as a refinement of the first Ottava Magus rather than a new circuit. Catalinbread's own framing was "Everything you loved about the original, and some really cool new refinements that we think discerning players will appreciate"1.
Two controls carry those refinements:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Saturation | New on the II. Alters the playing feel for a more saturated, spongy feel1 |
| Intensity | Refined for better control over the usable range of sounds1 |
The II also adds more gain than the original. In Catalinbread's words, it gives you "those 'Holy crap - mah amp is fixin' to 'splode' sounds"1.
The Ottava Magus II was announced in 2009 and its documented specifications here come from the launch announcement. Catalinbread has since released other octave-related pedals, including the Perseus DIO, which works in the opposite direction as an octave-down fuzz.

What is new on the Ottava Magus II compared with the original?
Catalinbread said the II keeps everything players liked about the original and adds refinements: a new Saturation control that alters the playing feel for a more saturated, spongy feel, a refined Intensity control for better control over the usable range of sounds, and more gain, which the company described as producing those 'Holy crap - mah amp is fixin' to 'splode' sounds.
