The CNZ Audio GEQ-5 is a five-band equalization pedal for guitar, giving you cut and boost control over five frequency bands from 100 Hz to 4 kHz. CNZ Audio describes it as a solid device that lets you manage your highs, mids and lows without sacrificing the natural sound of your guitar1. It sits alongside other tone-shaping tools like compressor pedals and preamp pedals on an equalization pedals board.
The five bands
The GEQ-5 gives you adjustment points at 100, 250 and 630 Hz as well as 1.6 kHz and 4 kHz1. That covers the practical range of a guitar signal: the 100 and 250 Hz points shape the low end and low mids, 630 Hz and 1.6 kHz sit in the midrange where a guitar's body lives, and 4 kHz reaches into the highs. CNZ Audio positions the pedal as a way to manage highs, mids and lows while keeping the natural sound of the guitar intact1.
Controls, connections and power
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Bands | 100 Hz, 250 Hz, 630 Hz, 1.6 kHz, 4 kHz1 |
| Input | 470K Ohms, 1/4 inch mono connector1 |
| Output | 1K Ohms, 1/4 inch mono connector1 |
| Power | 9VDC input, center negative, 8 mA1 |
| Bypass | True Bypass1 |
The pedal is true bypass, which CNZ Audio says gives a transparent output when the pedal is off, allowing the natural tone of your guitar and amp to come through1. Power comes from a 9VDC input with the negative on the center and the positive on the outside, drawing 8 mA1. That is a light enough draw that any standard pedalboard supply handles it.
The GEQ-5 has no battery option listed; it runs from a 9VDC center-negative supply at 8 mA1.
Build and size
CNZ Audio specifies a solid aluminum housing on all sides with a firm foot switch1. The pedal measures 3.75 inches long by 1.77 inches wide by 1.9 inches high and weighs .54 lbs including the box1, so it takes up little room on a board next to overdrive pedals or delay pedals.
