The DigiTech Screamin' Blue Overdrive is a compact overdrive pedal released in 1997 and now discontinued. It listed for around $99 when new1. The pedal is DigiTech's take on a Blues Driver style circuit rather than the exact Blues Driver itself, sitting alongside other overdrive designs covered on the Overdrive Pedals page1.
Controls
The Screamin' Blue carries four controls1:
- Level - output volume
- Low - low EQ
- High - high EQ
- Gain - amount of overdrive
The separate Low and High controls give it a two-band EQ, a step beyond the single-tone control found on many overdrives of its era1.
How it compares to the Blues Driver
Writing for Guitar Pedal X, Stefan Karlsson placed the Screamin' Blue among the derivatives and adjacents of the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, describing it as "DigiTech's take on a Blues Driver style circuit - rather than the exact Blues Driver itself"1.
On the differences in sound, he noted that "you get a more punchy short of low end - still sounds great - while I do prefer the overall original Blues Driver profil"1. In other words, the similarities in gain cleanup and overall tonality are there, with a punchier low end, though that reviewer preferred the low end of the original Blues Driver profile1.
The Screamin' Blue is a discontinued pedal, so units circulate only on the used market. DigiTech's overdrive line has since continued through models like the DigiTech Bad Monkey and the current DigiTech Badder Monkey.
