The DOD FX22 Vibro Thang is a vibrato and phaser pedal from DOD, a two-in-one modulation design from the mid 1990s. Its speed is set with an RPMs/Speed control, and the circuit is built around a JRC 2904D chip1.
Versions and circuit changes
The FX22 went through at least two graphics versions, and the circuit changed between them. In 1995 a resistor between the RPMs/Speed pot and the JRC 2904D chip measured 22 kOhms; by 1997 it had been changed to 10 kOhms1. All versions examined carried the same circuit board marking, P/N# 80-1022-A01.
That revision matters to how the pedal behaves. The Guitar FX Layouts examination of several examples found that the lone original 1995 graphics version they saw "did not permit a fast vibrato effect, while both examples" of the later version did1. A player who wants the faster vibrato sounds would need one of the later units.
The original 1995 graphics version and the later versions are not interchangeable in behavior: the early run could not reach a fast vibrato, while later examples could1.
What players and builders said about it
Opinions among builders who have worked with the pedal differ on how tame it is. One contributor, adam, recalled the original 1995 version this way1:
"From memory it was quite tame. Great sound quality but simply was not what i was looking for at the time"
Another, mirosol, disagreed:
"Tame is not the word i would use to describe FX22, not my original, nor my build."
