The DOD Vibrothang is a modulation pedal that puts three related effects in one enclosure: phase shifting, vibrato and tremolo. Guitar.com's Cillian Breathnach described it as "a unique combo of phase, vibrato and tremolo", which is what sets it apart from pedals that do only one of those things1. The pedal also appears on the site as the DOD FX22 Vibro Thang, its full model name.
What it does
The Vibrothang covers three kinds of movement in a guitar signal:
- Phaser: sweeps filters through the tone
- Vibrato: bends the pitch up and down
- Tremolo: raises and lowers the volume
Most pedals specialize in one of these; the Vibrothang's appeal, as Guitar.com framed it, is that it combines all three1. For a player, that means one pedal can cover ground that would otherwise take several.
Availability and reliability
Guitar.com notes that the pedal is not hard to find used:
"the original Vibrothang is relatively attainable second-hand"
So players looking for one on the used market are not chasing a rare or expensive piece1.
The same review carries a caution about build quality. The pedal is housed in a vintage DOD enclosure that, in Guitar.com's words, "has a reputation for being not the most mechanically reliable thing in the world"1.
The Vibrothang's DOD enclosure "has a reputation for being not the most mechanically reliable thing in the world", according to Guitar.com1. That is worth weighing against the attainable second-hand price: a used example may need more care than a modern pedal would.
Related pedals
The Vibrothang's three-in-one approach, a unique combo of phase, vibrato and tremolo, sets it apart from single-effect pedals, and the original remains relatively attainable second-hand1. One thing to know before hunting one down: it is housed in a bland-looking vintage DOD enclosure with a reputation for being not the most mechanically reliable thing in the world1.
