The Dolamo D4 Distortion is a compact distortion pedal from Dolamo, a company Delicious Audio describes as sans-website and probably based in China, whose pedals are, in that outlet's words, "incredibly affordable (like $25-affordable!)"1. The pedal aims squarely at classic rock gain: Delicious Audio describes it as "Reproducing the high gain distortion of the 70's and 80's rock era which is high on the list of many guitarists"1.

What it does and how it is controlled

The D4 keeps things simple with three controls: level, gain and tone. Delicious Audio notes that this three-control design can produce a wide range of sounds, from subtle gain to fully cranked up high gain distortion1. The pedal's stated inspiration is the Plexitone, and Delicious Audio says it is "Based on the sound of the Plexitone with a good simulation of the British Marshall Amp"1. For players curious where the D4 sits among distortion pedals, it is a straightforward gain box rather than a multi-mode design, and it sits alongside other budget Dolamo offerings such as the Dolamo D-11 Vintage Distortion.

The IdiotBox reissue

The D4 design has also been taken up by IdiotBox Effects, which sells a D4 Distortion Reissue2. IdiotBox describes it as a pedal with "plenty of volume and gravelly gain on tap with a true tone that will boost" or lower highs, and says that at high gain it can get a little muffy, while at lower gain it loosens up and can work as an overdrive or tap into rodent territory. Into a hot tube amp, the maker says it gives metal vibes almost like a JCM 8002. The reissue is listed at $99.00 USD as of October 2026 and has true bypass switching2.

Pedal of the Day reviewed the IdiotBox version in 2016, calling it "a basic power distortion box, capable of doing crunchy, overdriven tones, as well as balls-out, fuzzy distort[ion]", and noted the semi-iconic robot plastered on its enclosure3. For comparison, the IdiotBox version has its own page at IdiotBox Effects -D4 Distortion.

Build and value

Delicious Audio's verdict on the original Dolamo was that it is inexpensive but of good quality, with a strong alloy casing1. The true bypass switching and LED indicator mean it behaves predictably on a board: when off, the circuit is out of the signal path1.

"Inexpensive but good quality."

Questions

Is the Dolamo D4 true bypass?

Yes. Delicious Audio lists the D4 with true bypass switching and an on/off LED status indicator, and IdiotBox Effects likewise describes its D4 reissue as having true bypass switching. That means the pedal's circuit is removed from the signal path entirely when it is switched off, so it should not colour your clean tone when bypassed.

What circuit is the Dolamo D4 based on?

According to Delicious Audio, the D4 is based on the sound of the Plexitone, with a good simulation of a British Marshall amp. The Plexitone is a high gain distortion design, and the D4 aims at the high gain distortion of the 1970s and 1980s rock era.

How much does the Dolamo D4 cost?

When Delicious Audio covered it in 2021, the D4 was described as incredibly affordable, around $25. The IdiotBox Effects D4 Distortion Reissue, a separate version of the pedal, is listed at $99.00 USD on the maker's product page as of October 2026.

What is the Dolamo D4 enclosure made of?

Delicious Audio describes the D4 as having a strong alloy casing, and judged the pedal inexpensive but of good quality build and value.
