The EarthQuaker Devices Bellows Legacy Reissue is a limited-edition reissue of the Bellows Fuzz Driver, a two-transistor dirt pedal that EarthQuaker Devices discontinued in 2019. It is built around the same circuit as the original, packed into a compact enclosure with new artwork by Geoffrey Crowe, and limited to 1,000 units worldwide12.

What the Bellows does is sit in the gap between overdrive and fuzz. EarthQuaker Devices describes it this way34:

"It straddles the line between amp-like grit and fuzzy saturation to create a remarkably vintage, tweed-type tone."3

At lower Drive settings the pedal is, in the maker's words, "a little wider and grittier," and turning Drive up carries it through what the original product page called "a bunch of useful distorted places in between" before reaching blown-out fuzz34. Guitar Pedal X characterizes it as a "Fuzzy-Drive, Fuzz-Drive and Fuzzstortion pedal with Overdrive characteristics"1.

A fuzz driver between amp grit and fuzz

The original Bellows Fuzz Driver was part of EarthQuaker Devices' lineup until 2019, when it was discontinued; the maker's page for the original now states plainly that the device is no longer in production4. Guitar Pedal X notes that the pedal had enough of a following that its return was driven by demand from players1.

The reissue arrived as part of EarthQuaker Devices' Legacy Reissue Series, returning "for a limited run"5. Gearnews reported the Bellows limited to 1,000 units worldwide5.

Premier Guitar adds a detail that bass players will care about. Designer Jamie Stillman, who initially developed the pedal for guitar, is quoted there saying2:

"While I initially developed it for guitar, I feel like it really excels on bass."2

That makes it worth a look alongside the maker's other bass pedals, and it distinguishes the Bellows from EarthQuaker Devices' more specialized fuzz designs like the Hoof V2 or the Hizumitas, which are voiced with particular sounds in mind rather than sitting between categories.

The controls: Level and Drive

The Bellows Legacy Reissue keeps the original's two-knob layout. Both controls are simple on the surface, but each does a little more than its name suggests32.

ControlWhat it does
DriveSets the input gain for different levels of dirt. Counterclockwise is thinner and more clean; clockwise is thicker with more growl, running from grit through to blown-out fuzz3.
LevelAdjusts the output level by setting the bias voltage of the transistor. A small amount of noise while dialing this in is perfectly normal3.

The Level control working through transistor bias rather than a simple volume pot is worth knowing before you tweak it mid-song: the maker is explicit that some noise while adjusting is normal, not a fault3.

Power and connections

Power comes from a standard 9V DC supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel, drawing 13 mA32. EarthQuaker Devices puts a warning in capital letters on the product page: "DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!"3

The Bellows is true bypass with electronic relay-based switching, and audio will not pass without power. If it disappears from your board mid-gig, check the power first: unlike mechanically switched pedals, it cannot pass signal with a dead supply3.

Input impedance is 250 kΩ and output impedance is under 1 kΩ, figures that put it in normal pedalboard territory for both placement in a chain and driving long cable runs32.

Availability and versions

In the US, the Bellows Legacy Reissue is sold exclusively through Sweetwater, which also carries a Sweetwater special Black on Teal edition; in Canada it goes through Long & McQuade, and elsewhere through authorized EarthQuaker Devices dealers312. The US MAP price is $1292. Guitar Pedal X lists the UK price at £1381.

Because the run is capped at 1,000 units worldwide, the reissue is a one-time revival rather than a permanent catalog item12. Players who miss it still have the used market for the original Bellows Fuzz Driver, and EarthQuaker Devices' current fuzz lineup covers similar ground in different ways.

Questions

Is the Bellows Legacy Reissue the same circuit as the original Bellows?

Yes. Premier Guitar reports that the limited-edition Bellows features the same circuit as the original Bellows Fuzz Driver, which EarthQuaker Devices discontinued in 2019. The reissue puts that circuit in a compact enclosure with new artwork by Geoffrey Crowe.

How many Bellows Legacy Reissue pedals were made?

The run is limited to 1,000 units worldwide, according to both Premier Guitar and Guitar Pedal X. Once those are gone, EarthQuaker Devices has not announced another production run, so it is effectively a one-time reissue.

Where can I buy the Bellows Legacy Reissue in the US?

In the US it is sold exclusively through Sweetwater, including a Sweetwater special Black on Teal edition. In Canada it goes through Long & McQuade, and elsewhere through authorized EarthQuaker Devices dealers. The US MAP price is $129.

Does the Bellows pass signal without power?

No. EarthQuaker Devices states that the pedal is true bypass with electronic relay-based switching, and that audio will not pass without power. It needs a 9V DC supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel, and the maker warns not to run it at higher voltages.

When was the original EarthQuaker Bellows discontinued?

The original Bellows Fuzz Driver was discontinued in 2019, according to Guitar Pedal X. EarthQuaker Devices' own page for the original now states that the device is no longer in production, which is what prompted this limited Legacy Reissue.
