The Emma Electronic DiscomBOBulator is an envelope filter pedal. Delicious Audio's review of the pedal, published in April 2014, describes it with knobs for Sensitivity, Width and Attack, and a switch for choosing an Upwards or Downwards sweep1. Of its overall sound, the review reports claims of everything from "more Mu-tron than the Mu-tron"1. For more on the effect type itself, see Filter Pedals.
What it does
The DiscomBOBulator listens to the incoming signal and opens or closes a filter according to how hard the player picks. The Sensitivity knob sets precise tracking and shaping of the effect, while Width and Attack shape the sweep itself, and the direction switch decides whether the filter moves up or down as the note swells1.
Delicious Audio's reviewer, Paolo De Gregorio, noted the breadth of sources the pedal accepts: "They claim that this little puppy can track to any source from guitar to bass to whatever you wanna try plugging in."1 That makes it a candidate for bass players as much as guitarists, with the Sensitivity control dialed to suit the instrument.
On how it sounds next to the classic it evokes, De Gregorio passed on the word of mouth around the pedal: "Reports claim everything from 'more Mu-tron than the Mu-tron'."1
