CircuitOTA-based, rather than vactrol-based2

The Fjord Fuzz Frei is a uni-vibe pedal: a modulation effect in the style of the classic Uni-Vibe, producing the throbbing, phase-shifting chorus and vibrato tones players associate with that circuit family. Delicious Audio reports that the Norwegian builder released the Frei in early 2023, expanding into the uni-vibe circuit with this pedal1.

How the circuit works

A traditional uni-vibe design uses vactrols, which are light-dependent resistors paired with a light source, to sweep the phase-shifting stages. Guitar Pedal X reports that the Frei, along with the later Midnattssol, was instead made with OTAs, because the core light-dependent resistors and vactrols used in the classic design contained cadmium sulphide, a banned material2. For a player, that means the Frei delivers the uni-vibe style of movement without relying on those components.

"the last 2 iterations (Frei & Midnattssol) were made with OTA’s, as the core Light-Dependent Resistors / Vactrols contained traces of Cadmium Sulphide"

Where it sits in the Fjord Fuzz range

The Frei was the builder's first step into the uni-vibe circuit, and its circuit went on to appear in later Fjord Fuzz pedals. The SOL Fuzz-Vibe pairs a silicon fuzz with a Frei-based uni-vibe, and the Midnattssol combines fuzz modes with uni-vibe and Resly-Tone vibe modes12. The builder later released the Frøy Resly-Vibe, a dedicated vibe pedal in the same family2.

Questions

When did the Fjord Fuzz Frei come out?

Delicious Audio reports that the Frei was released in early 2023, marking Fjord Fuzz's expansion into the uni-vibe circuit. It was followed by later vibe-equipped pedals from the same builder, including the SOL Fuzz-Vibe and the Midnattssol fuzz and vibe workstation.

Why does the Frei use OTAs instead of vactrols?

Guitar Pedal X notes that the Frei and the Midnattssol were made with OTAs because the core light-dependent resistors, or vactrols, traditionally used in this kind of circuit contained cadmium sulphide, a banned material. OTAs reproduce the phase-shifting behaviour without those components.
