The Foxrox Octron2 is an analog octave pedal from Foxrox Electronics, offering three signals at once: an analog octave up, an analog octave down, and the direct signal. Each signal has its own footswitch and LED, so you can bring the up and down octaves in and out independently while your clean tone stays put1. It belongs to the wider family of octave and pitch pedals.

Where it came from

Dave Fox has told the story of the Octron2's origin on the Foxrox site: Frank Marino inspired him to create the Octron2, and a June 2, 2005 meeting with Marino led to the design. As Fox put it, "That gave me the confidence to go ahead and design Octron2." Marino also helped tune the pedal's low octave: "Frank also helped me tune in the super-fat Low octave sound that Octron is famous for"2.

Controls and footswitches

The Octron2's layout follows its three-signal design:

  • Octave UP, Direct and Octave DOWN: the pedal's three signals, each independently switchable1
  • Footswitches and LEDs: each signal has its own foot switch and LED2
  • Internal adjustments: Octave UP and DOWN have internal adjustments rather than front-panel controls1

The octave up and down tones are set with internal adjustments, so changing them means opening the pedal rather than turning a knob on the top panel1.

Effects loop

The Octron2 includes jacks for an effects loop. Dave Fox describes it plainly: "Octron2 has jacks for an effects loop that few people use"1. The later Octron4 dropped the loop in its redesign1.

Octron2 compared

Foxrox has described the Octron2's low octave in its own words. According to Dave Fox, "Frank also helped me tune in the super-fat Low octave sound that Octron is famous for"12. That low octave voicing is the through-line of the Octron series, carried from the original Octron into the Octron2.

Questions

What is the difference between the Foxrox Octron2 and the original Octron?

According to Dave Fox of Foxrox Electronics, the Octron2 functions the same as the original Octron. The Octron2 was designed after a June 2, 2005 meeting with Frank Marino, whose suggestions and modified Octron shaped the new version, including the super-fat low octave sound the Octron is known for.

Does the Foxrox Octron2 have an effects loop?

Yes. Dave Fox notes that the Octron2 has jacks for an effects loop, though he describes it as a feature that few people use. The later Octron4 dropped the effects loop as part of its redesign.

Who designed the Foxrox Octron2?

The Octron2 was designed by Dave Fox of Foxrox Electronics. He has written that Frank Marino inspired him to create the Octron2, and that Marino's suggestions and a modified Octron gave him the confidence to go ahead with the design.

How big is the Foxrox Octron2?

The Octron2 measures 5.6 inches wide and 5.2 inches deep. Dave Fox notes that the Octron2 and the later Octron4 are the same width, though the Octron4 is shallower.

Can I run octave up and octave down at the same time on the Octron2?

Yes. The Octron2 offers Octave UP, Direct and Octave DOWN signals, and each signal has its own footswitch and LED, so you can switch the up and down octaves independently and run them together with your direct signal.
