The fOXX Clean Machine is a vintage overdrive and fuzz pedal made by Ridinger Associates Inc of Chatsworth, California, in the early 1970s. Tonehome describes it as "a pure overdrive/fuzz box", dating it to 1973, with a US retail price in 1974 of $69.951. It sits in the same family of early fOXX effects as the better-known Tone Machine, covered on the Fuzz Pedals page alongside other drive types such as Overdrive Pedals and Distortion Pedals.
Controls
The pedal's single main control is a rotary switch on the left side. Tonehome describes it as giving four different options of distortion: warm overdrive at position 1, moving through the range to over-the-top fuzz at position 5, a layout reminiscent of the rotary switches on the triangle and ram's head Big Muff fuzzes1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rotary switch (left side) | Four distortion options, from warm overdrive at position 1 to over-the-top fuzz at position 51 |
Service information
For players repairing or restoring one, Tonehome hosts a downloadable fOXX Clean Machine schematic1.
The Clean Machine is a 1970s pedal, long out of production. Anyone working on one today is dealing with a vintage unit, and the published schematic is the usual starting point for servicing.
