The Free The Tone RED JASPER RJ-1V is an analog overdrive pedal from Japanese maker Free The Tone, and it holds a specific place in the company's history: it was Free The Tone's first low-gain drive pedal12. Where the maker's other drives push harder, the Red Jasper was built around the sound of a tube amp pushed into its sweet spot rather than a high-gain distortion.

RockBoard's PedalPedia describes the design goal in vintage-amp terms: the pedal "has been designed to obtain these magical attributes that only superb vintage tube amps can usually produce," with smooth highs, punchy mids, full but tight lows, and a sensitive, responsive, natural and pleasing compression feel1. Designer Yuki Hayashi told MusicRadar that both the natural overdrive of cranked valve amps and Klon's Centaur inspired the pedal3.

The RJ-1V was discontinued in 2018 because some of its component parts became difficult to obtain45.

A low-gain overdrive modeled on a cranked tube amp

The Red Jasper sits in a fairly wide 100mm die-cast enclosure, similar in size to Free The Tone's Heat Blaster HB-2 distortion3. RockBoard's PedalPedia says a slightly larger die-cast case was adopted "with first priority placed on sound"1. Inside is what Free The Tone calls its Holistic Tonal Solution (HTS) circuitry, which manages the signal from input to output so the effect tone and bypass tone always keep the same quality32.

MusicRadar billed it as Free The Tone's first "low-gain overdrive"3, and the maker's own description frames it the same way: the pedal was developed to give a magical sound like a superb vintage tube amp, combining smooth highs, punchy mids, a full and tight low end, and a delicate, responsive, natural and pleasant compression feel8.

The controls

The control layout is minimal. Three knobs: DRIVE, HI-CUT and LEVEL28. MusicRadar's reviewer called the layout "simplicity itself with Level, Hi-Cut and Gain dials the only tweakables"3.

ControlWhat it does
DRIVESets the amount of overdrive2
HI-CUTRolls off high frequencies2
LEVELSets the output volume2

Power and connections

The RJ-1V runs on 9V DC, center negative, drawing approximately 15mA132. Power comes from either a 9V 006P-type battery or an AC adapter through the DC9V input jack2. The box included the warranty card, the manual, a 9V battery and four rubber feet2.

Connections are straightforward: one 1/4-inch input jack, one 1/4-inch output jack, and the DC9V adapter jack28. Output load impedance is rated at 10kΩ or above2.

What reviewers said

MusicRadar's review, written by Jamie Dickson, tested the pedal against different amps and found the pairing mattered. Into smallish EL84-based amps it "seems to work best... producing a detailed drive tone with an incisive edge" and an open and airy bloom3. Into a 6L6-powered amp with more headroom, it accentuated softer fuzz tones at the cost of some bite and definition, and the reviewer suggested it was best used there as a clean boost with the gain low and the level high3.

On the question of its lineage, the reviewer compared it to other Klon-inspired pedals3:

"we'd say the Red Jasper is less glassy and toppy than some Klon-inspired pedals out there, with an extremely musical, flattering character all its own."3

The overall verdict was positive but priced accordingly: "This pedal isn't cheap, but there's no snake-oil here: one of the more sophisticated and characterful overdrives we've tried," with "Pricey" listed among its drawbacks3.

Where it sits in Free The Tone's range

The RJ-1V was the maker's first low-gain drive pedal and won popularity in that role before production ended in 201845. Free The Tone's drive lineup has since included the Fire Mist FM-1V, the String Slinger SS-1V and the OVERDRIVELAND ODL-1.

Questions

Is the Red Jasper RJ-1V a Klon clone?

No. Designer Yuki Hayashi told MusicRadar that both the natural overdrive of cranked valve amps and Klon's Centaur inspired the pedal, but the Red Jasper is its own circuit. MusicRadar's reviewer found it less glassy and toppy than some Klon-inspired pedals, with a musical, flattering character of its own.

Why was the Free The Tone Red Jasper discontinued?

Free The Tone ended production of the RJ-1V in 2018 because some of its component parts became difficult to obtain. The pedal had won popularity as the maker's first low-gain drive pedal before it was retired.

Does the RJ-1V take a battery?

Yes. It runs on a 9V 006P-type battery or a 9V AC adapter through its DC9V input jack, and a battery was included in the box along with the warranty card, manual and four rubber feet.

Is the Red Jasper true bypass or buffered?

Neither, exactly. It uses Free The Tone's HTS (Holistic Tonal Solution) circuit, which the maker says combines the best aspects of true bypass and buffered circuits so the effect and bypass tones keep the same quality.

What amps does the Red Jasper work with?

MusicRadar's reviewer found it works best with smallish EL84-based amps, producing a detailed drive tone with an incisive edge and an open, airy bloom. Into a 6L6-powered amp with more headroom it leaned toward softer fuzz tones, and the reviewer suggested using it as a clean boost there.
