The Frusrite FRUSaxis is a single-knob analog preamp pedal that acts as a clean boost, adding a slight crunch and brightness to the signal. It is built on the preamp circuit found in the Moogerfooger MF-101 and MF-102 pedals, which RockBoard's PedalPedia describes as "a key component of John Frusciante's tone"1. For players chasing that kind of preamp-based tone in a small format, it sits alongside other preamp pedals and boost pedals.

What it does

The FRUSaxis is a single-knob pedal. The Drive knob controls the output level and saturation, so turning it up pushes the circuit harder as well as raising the volume. Inside, an internal trimpot adjusts the gain for more or less saturation, letting the player set the pedal's ceiling of crunch before it ever reaches the knob1.

Frusrite positions it two ways: "The pedal can be used as an always-on tone shaper or as a boost for specific moments"1. As an always-on preamp it adds a slight crunch and brightness to the base tone; as a momentary boost it lifts a solo or a section above the rest of the board.

Circuit lineage

The circuit is drawn from the preamp section of the Moogerfooger MF-101 and MF-102, Moog's filter and drive pedals. Frusrite's product page ties that circuit to John Frusciante's tone, which is the stated inspiration for the pedal1. A pedalboard built around that player's 2006 setup, the "Frusciante 2006 inspired Full Vintage Pedals" board by Tomas Alarcon, features the FRUSaxis1.
