The Royal Plush Compressor is a compressor pedal from Fuchs Audio Technology, described by Pedal of the Day's Mike B as "sometimes you just want a simple compressor pedal with easy controls and great sound". Its distinguishing feature is on the inside: "the Royal Plush uses an actual photocell inside, for studio compressor quality and sound"1. Photocell-based compression is the approach behind several classic studio designs, and it is what gives this pedal its character.
The pedal runs on just two knobs, and it covers a wide range: "from a nice and clean boost to warm and smooth compression"1. At the low end of the Bias control it works as a clean level lift; turned up, it smooths out dynamics the way a studio compressor would.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bias | Controls the amount of compression that is added into your main signal1 |
| Volume | Controls the overall output of the pedal1 |
The pedal is true-bypass, so when it is switched off your guitar's signal passes through untouched1.
Noise and build
Fuchs chose the internal parts with noise in mind. As the review puts it: "with specially chosen internal audio components, low noise and zero distortion are all but guaranteed"1. For a compressor, which by its nature works on quiet passages of your playing, keeping the noise floor down matters, and that is where the component selection shows.
Visually it is hard to miss on a board: Mike B calls it "this bold purple pedal"1.
