The Fuzzrocious Croak Expressive Double Filter Fuzz is a fuzz pedal that puts two filter stages around its fuzz circuit, so the player can shape the tone while the fuzz runs. Guitar Pedal X included it in its look at the year's new fuzz pedals, listing it at $189 USD (also given as £179) as of December 20201. It sits in the maker's fuzz line alongside pedals like the Gray Stache and Heliotropic, and belongs to the broader family of fuzz pedals and filter pedals.
Controls
The Croak carries five controls, arranged around its two filter stages. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson described the layout as follows1:
"You have 5 controls - Pre (Pre-Gain), Filter 1 (Formant), Filter 2 (Envelope) and a Filter 1 Bypass switch."
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Pre | Pre-Gain for the fuzz circuit1 |
| Filter 1 | Formant filter1 |
| Filter 2 | Envelope filter1 |
| Filter 1 Bypass switch | Takes Filter 1 out of the circuit1 |
Footswitches
The Croak uses two footswitches, and they do different jobs. The right-hand switch is the usual On/Off and bypass control. The left-hand switch is momentary: holding it down accentuates the output with what Karlsson described as "a fixed/cocked wah sounding style of effect"1. That makes the pedal expressive in performance, since the accent is under the player's foot for as long as it is held, in the spirit of a wah parked in one position.
