The Gervana Ji Wei is a high-gain distortion pedal from the Chinese brand Gervana, built to put the tones and functionality of a high-gain Mesa/Boogie amplifier on a pedalboard. Premier Guitar's reviewer described it as a Chinese-made pedal that "aims to replicate the tones and functionality of high-gain Mesa/Boogie amps"1. Gervana launched the Ji Wei in September 2018 with a street price of $149.992.

What it does to your sound

The Ji Wei is a "Mesa in a box" style pedal: a distortion circuit intended to evoke the character of Mesa/Boogie's high-gain amplifiers rather than a generic overdrive. Gervana's press material went further, saying the Ji Wei (pronounced "Jee Way") "may be the most versatile \"Mesa in a box\" pedal you can find"2.

The tone shaping is where it leans into that idea. The pedal carries a five-band EQ, which the press release said "allows for precise tone shaping"2, and the review counted the seven top-panel knobs: low, mid low, mid, mid high, high, level, and gain1. Five of those knobs are the EQ bands, giving far more control over the mids than the three-band or single-tone sections found on most distortion pedals.

Footswitches and the V-boost

The Ji Wei has two footswitches, and they do different jobs:

  • The rightmost footswitch activates the distortion1.
  • The left stomp engages a mid-scooped boost, which Premier Guitar's reviewer described as "inspired by the footswitchable 5-band EQ on many Mesas"1.

There is also an "Effect" switch on the left of the top panel. According to the press release, this activates the V-boost, "which makes your tone instantly more modern and aggressive"2.

What reviewers said

Premier Guitar's quick-hit review listed the pedal's strengths as a "Decent variety of Mesa/Boogie-esque sounds" and a "Respectable amount of gain"1.

Gervana's other pedals

Gervana has continued to release distortion and fuzz designs from China. The brand later launched the hand-wired Gervana Ji Si distortion pedal with a boost channel, also at a $149 street price, and the Gervana Wuyin Multi-Muff Fuzz, a nine-combination Big Muff style fuzz covered by Guitar Pedal X in February 2026.

Questions

What does the left footswitch on the Gervana Ji Wei do?

The rightmost footswitch activates the distortion itself, while the left stomp engages a mid-scooped boost. Premier Guitar's reviewer described that boost as inspired by the footswitchable five-band EQ found on many Mesa/Boogie amps, so it is meant to work like kicking in the lead channel on one of those amplifiers.

How many bands does the Ji Wei EQ have?

The Ji Wei has a five-band EQ. Premier Guitar's press material said the five-band EQ allows for precise tone shaping, and the review described seven top-panel knobs covering low, mid low, mid, mid high, high, level, and gain.

What is the Gervana Ji Wei list price?

At its 2018 launch, Premier Guitar reported a street price of $149.99. A 2021 Premier Guitar review listed the street price as $149.

Where is the Gervana Ji Wei made?

Premier Guitar's review described the Ji Wei as Chinese-made, in keeping with the brand's origin.
