The Goliath FX D-05 is an analog distortion pedal that also works as an overdrive and preamp, sitting somewhere between the distortion and overdrive camps. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as "my take on a classic pre-amp distortion pedal in a killer swirl design," and the circuit is a modified version of an original design: "It has several modifications from the original design."1
What it does
The D-05 covers three roles in one box. As a distortion it can run heavier, and the maker's headline control is a toggle: "First we have a toggle for a thicker, heavier distortion." That gives the pedal two voices, with the toggle switching to the thicker, heavier setting when a player wants more weight behind the drive.1
Because the circuit is analog and doubles as a preamp, it can be used to push an amp or another drive stage as well as to provide distortion on its own. Players comparing it with other drives may find it useful to read about preamp pedals and how a Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer comparison frames the difference between lighter overdrive and harder distortion.1
The swirl finish
Each D-05 enclosure is finished in a swirl design, and no two come out the same. The maker notes: "The swirl comes out different every time and if you want a particular set of colours, then please contact us first." In other words, the colors are not fixed: a player who wants a specific color scheme should reach the maker before ordering rather than expect to choose from a list.1
The swirl finish varies from unit to unit, and particular color sets are only available by contacting the maker first.1
