The GUPtech GrindR Derryl Vi Artist edition is an artist edition of the GrindR, a clean boost pedal from Canadian maker GUPtech. The core circuit gives 20dB of clean boost, with a bypassable preamp carrying bass and treble controls, switched in or out with the left toggle1. The Derryl Vi edition goes further than the standard GrindR: GUPtech describes it as a three in one, including the old school popular Integrated Preamp, switchable with the left toggle1.

What it does

At its heart this is the GrindR boost: 20dB of clean boost with a preamp section offering bass and treble controls, and the left toggle bypasses that preamp when you want the boost alone1. The Derryl Vi edition adds the Integrated Preamp as a third element, switchable with the left toggle, which is what GUPtech means by calling it a three in one1.

The right toggle switches between the original "Grind" EQ or the "33" EQ, giving two voicings for the boosted signal1. Players looking at other boost options in the GUPtech range can compare it with the Peeps Clean Boost, the Le Chiou EQ-Boost or the Slime Mid-Boost, and with other GrindR editions such as the Truck Driver Shawn Edition and the Plem Edition.

The artist edition treatment

The Derryl Vi edition was announced on 5 August 2021 as GUPtech's DerrylV artist edition of the GrindR1. The visual treatment was specified by the artist himself:

"Handpicked parts by Derryl himself to make our GrindR the most badass looking ever. Black Footswitch, black laser etched"
GUPtech product page1

The handpicked parts list includes a black footswitch, a black laser etched design, a green LED and all black knobs, on a black enclosure1. GUPtech has used the same artist edition approach elsewhere, as with the Mad Chiou Scott Bynoe Artist edition.

Power and availability

GUPtech specifies 9Vdc ONLY, center negative, and warns that anything over 9V will blow the pedal1. Power consumption is 21mA1.

All of GUPtech's pedals are made by the company in Saguenay, Québec, Canada1. The Derryl Vi Artist edition was listed at £82.00 GBP on 5 August 20211, and the product page now shows it as sold out1. The standard GrindR carries the same boost and preamp design for players who want the circuit without the artist edition cosmetics.

Questions

What voltage does the GrindR Derryl Vi edition use?

The Derryl Vi Artist edition runs on 9Vdc only, with a center negative power supply. GUPtech warns that anything over 9V will blow the pedal, so it should not be fed from a higher-voltage supply even if an adapter physically fits. Power consumption is listed at 21mA, which is light enough for most pedalboard power supplies.

Is the Derryl Vi artist edition still available?

No. GUPtech announced the Derryl Vi Artist edition of the GrindR on 5 August 2021, and the product page shows it as sold out. The standard GrindR and other editions of the pedal remain the way to get the same boost circuit.

What is different about the Derryl Vi edition?

It is an artist edition of the GrindR with parts handpicked by Derryl himself: a black footswitch, a black laser etched design, a green LED and all black knobs, in a black enclosure. Functionally it is a three in one unit, adding the old school popular Integrated Preamp, switchable with the left toggle, to the standard GrindR boost.

Where is the GUPtech GrindR made?

GUPtech states that all of its pedals are made by the company in Saguenay, Québec, Canada, and the GrindR Derryl Vi Artist edition is no exception. It is a Canadian-built pedal, not an imported design.
