The Hudson Electronics White Heat is a fuzz pedal and the maker's recreation of an Italian-made fuzz built between 1966 and 1970. Hudson describes it as delivering "a killer raspy fuzz with plenty of top end, without being an ice pick to the forehead." The pedal is now archived, so it no longer sits in the company's current lineup.1
What it does
The White Heat is a germanium fuzz. Hudson loads each one with a pair of new old-stock germanium transistors, which the maker says are custom tuned right to the sweet spot. Germanium fuzzes are often touchy about volume-knob cleanup, and this is where Hudson says the White Heat stands out: it "cleans up superbly when you roll back the volume on your guitar making it very versatile and usable in ma"1, meaning a player can go from full fuzz to a cleaner edge-of-breakup sound straight from the guitar.
Build and hardware
Each White Heat is built by hand from scratch onto vintage-style stripboard, using high quality components. The pedals come loaded with CITEC longlife pots.1
The White Heat is listed in Hudson Electronics' Archived category, so it is a discontinued design rather than a current product.1
Where it sits in the Hudson range
Hudson Electronics builds a wider family of fuzzes and related pedals, several of which have their own pages: the Buzzard, the FUZZ, the Soul Bomb, the Full Range Bomb and the Pretty Flamingo. The White Heat's distinguishing points, per the maker, are its germanium transistor pair and its volume-knob cleanup.1
