The Hungry Robot LG is a low-gain overdrive from Hungry Robot, designed, in the maker's words, "specifically to give you more of what makes your tone unique." Rather than pushing a pedal into heavy clipping, it aims to add warmth and body while leaving the player's core sound intact. The maker describes the result as "a rich, full character, touch responsive overdrive that has plenty of warmth and body."1
What it does
On the outside, the LG is a conventional three knob overdrive. The interesting part is inside: six internal dipswitches, each of which modifies a section of the circuitry to produce a range of sounds from one enclosure. The maker calls these switches "the key to The Hungry Robot's versatility."1
The circuit itself is a three transistor design, which Hungry Robot identifies as the source of its responsiveness to picking dynamics. For a player, that means the pedal sits in the touch-sensitive, low-gain territory often used to push an amp or add body to a clean tone, rather than the higher-gain ground covered by distortion pedals and fuzz pedals.1
History and availability
The LG was discontinued at one point in Hungry Robot's history. Marking the company's ten year history, Hungry Robot brought back some of its older, discontinued models as direct-only offerings built one by one as orders come in, and the LG is part of that program.1
The LG is a reissue of a discontinued model, sold direct and built to order one at a time, so availability differs from a normally stocked pedal.1
Related Hungry Robot overdrives
Hungry Robot has built several pedals around the LG circuit and its siblings3:
- Hungry Robot hg+lg: a dual overdrive pairing the HG and LG circuits in one enclosure.3
- Hungry Robot LG+LG: the same layout as the HG+LG, but with two of the popular LG circuits in one enclosure. It is also part of the Classics reissues of older, discontinued models.3
- Hungry Robot Dual Overdrive: the earlier dual overdrive into which the Blue Moon overdrive was absorbed when it was discontinued.3
In the dual layouts, both channels can be operated independently, so the two circuits can be used separately or stacked.4
Hungry Robot's overdrive range also includes The Lumen and the reissues of the Mosfet Breaker and Mosfet Screamer.3
