Interchange Noise Works Overdrive I

Overdrive

The Interchange Noise Works Overdrive I is an overdrive pedal with a single Volume control, built on the Electra Distortion circuit. It is the first of three sibling pedals from Interchange Noise Works, the Overdrives I, II and III, each voiced differently from the same basic design. Pedal of the Day reviewed the series in August 2021 and described the Overdrive I as "a classic overdrive circuit"1.

What it does

The Electra Distortion is a simple, long-standing circuit that builders often use as a starting point, and all three pedals in the series take their elements from it1. What sets the three apart is the parts inside: "The internal parts are different for each, and were swapped out by ear, as the builds went, to create these 3 specific t[ones]"1. In other words, the maker chose component values by listening, not by formula, to arrive at three distinct voices.

"They play well individually, and they play well together."

That last point matters if you run more than one of the series: Pedal of the Day found the pedals can be stacked together for new sounds, as well as used on their own1. If you are curious about the siblings, see the Interchange Noise Works Overdrive II.

Controls

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the output level; the pedal's only control1

With one knob and no other controls, the Overdrive I is a set-and-forget pedal: you place it on the board, dial in a level, and leave it. Players who want more shaping from a drive pedal would look elsewhere, but the single control is the design's point1.

Questions

What circuit is the Interchange Noise Works Overdrive I based on?

Pedal of the Day reports that Overdrives I, II and III all take their elements from the Electra Distortion circuit, a simple design that has long been a starting point for builders. Interchange Noise Works then changed the internal parts of each pedal, chosen by ear as the builds went, to create three distinct tones.

How many controls does the Overdrive I have?

Just one. According to Pedal of the Day, all three pedals in the series are equipped with a single Volume control, so the pedal is designed to be set and forgotten rather than adjusted from song to song.
