The Afterburner is an overdrive and booster pedal from J. Rockett Audio Designs, the maker behind drives such as the Archer, The Dude and the .45 Caliber Overdrive. It is listed as an "OVERDRIVE BOOSTER", so it covers both jobs: pushing an amp into breakup on its own, or lifting an already driven signal.1
What it does
J. Rockett describes the Afterburner as an overdrive built to behave like a tube amp rather than a stompbox effect. In the maker's own words1:
"The Afterburner is our new overdrive which we created to be as amp like as we could make it. The pedal settings are very interactive, so spend some time tweaking!"
That last point matters for how you set it: the maker says the controls interact with each other, so the sound changes depending on how the knobs are combined rather than each one acting alone. Players used to set-and-forget drives may need to spend some time dialing it in1.
Circuit and power
The Afterburner runs an analog circuit, the usual choice for overdrive and boost designs, and takes 9V DC center negative power, the standard for compact pedals.1 For more on where a drive like this sits next to the alternatives, see Overdrive Pedals and Boost Pedals.
