The Dude is an overdrive pedal from J. Rockett Audio Designs that aims to put the sound and feel of a Dumble Overdrive Special amp on a pedalboard. The maker describes it plainly: "The Dude is designed to achieve the classic D style ODS sounds and feel."1 It launched on January 29, 2016 as the company's third product release, announced as an OD/Boost pedal with four controls: Level, Ratio, Treble, and Deep, and I/O jacks at the head of the pedal.2

The circuit has a specific lineage. Guitar World's Trevor Curwen reports that The Dude "was based on a Dumble Overdrive Special amp owned by Keith Urban," while MusicRadar's review says it "was designed after close inspection of an original ODS."34 Gearnews places it among D-style pedals referencing the Dumble Overdrive Specials owned by Robben Ford and Larry Carlton, the two players most associated with the amp.5

A Dumble Overdrive Special in a pedal

The Dumble Overdrive Special is a hand-built amp with a waiting list and a price to match, so a pedal that gets close to its voice is the practical route for most players. Delicious Audio calls The Dude V2 J. Rockett's "four-knob Dumble Overdrive emulator," part of a line the site describes as no-frills amp-in-a-box pedals.7

The core of the design is the blend of clean and dirty signal. Premier Guitar's launch announcement explains that "the Dude uses a mix of dirty and clean signals via the Ratio knob to create a very amp like sound and feel," and that it "can act as a clean boost, produce classic Dumble sounds, and churn out smooth, high gain tones."2 That clean-blend approach is what separates D-style pedals from a straightforward boost: the amp's overdrive channel mixes compressed drive with the untouched signal, and the pedal works the same way.

Pete Thorn, demoing the pedal on his YouTube channel in 2016, called it J. Rockett's "take on the classic Dumble overdrive special type overdrive tone," adding that "the folks at Jrocket really really know how to make great overdrive pedals."8

The Dude was one of seven D-style overdrives compared in an early That Pedal Show episode, "Are You Dumble?", alongside a Boss BD-2, which gives a sense of how established it became among D-style options.9

The controls: Level, Ratio, Treble and Deep

Four knobs cover the whole pedal. Delicious Audio's writeup of the V2 sums up the layout: "Set your signal strength with the Ratio (gain) and Level controls, and adjust your EQ with Treble and Deep."7

ControlWhat it does
LevelVolume control; ups the output, introducing clean boost from about the 10 o'clock position45
RatioGain; blends the overdriven signal back in with the clean signal, from clean boost to fully overdriven46
TrebleControls the top end5
DeepControls the bottom end, operating around the lower mid frequencies45

The Ratio knob is the heart of the pedal. Tone Island's Adam Connell describes it as "essentially a blend control that allows you to blend the overdriven signal back in with the clean signal."6 MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen found that "the Ratio knob starts to blend in some gain to the clean boost until the sound is fully overdriven with some great blend," and that the pedal "retains string clarity and is sensitive to touch with rich harmonic content" throughout the sweep.4

The Deep control is more than a simple bass knob. MusicRadar describes it as operating "around the lower mid frequencies," where it "can put in a bit of a scoop or dial in a bit of 4x12 thump."4 Delicious Audio details the sweep: "The left side of the dial scoops the midrange and emphasizes treble and bass frequencies, while the right side boosts the midrange and attenuates the highs and lows."10 That makes it a midrange shaping control as much as a low-end one, useful for matching the pedal to a bright combo or a dark 4x12 cab.

V1 and V2: what changed

The Dude V2 is an updated version of the original, and the differences are modest. Tone Island reports that "The V2 model introduced a noiseless on/off switch," and Delicious Audio notes that "The Dude v2 has a less aggressive volume control" than the V1.67 The four controls and the D-style circuit concept carried over unchanged, and the maker's current product page sells the pedal as the Dude ODS V2.1

Power and practicalities

The maker specifies a 9 volt negative tip adapter with a 5.5mm x 2.1mm jack, the standard center-negative arrangement used by most pedalboard supplies.1 The original launch specified 9V DC operation with standard negative tip and positive sleeve, and MusicRadar confirms the pedal takes a nine-volt adaptor but "will also run off batteries, although the four screws for battery access are small so you'll have to be careful" when opening it.24

MusicRadar also describes the build: "nicely compact and reassuringly heavy pedals," part of J. Rockett's Tour Series that also includes the Archer Ikon, a Klon-style counterpart that the same review covers.4

What reviewers made of it

MusicRadar's verdict was positive across the gain range: "The Dude is an excellent sounding overdrive that can endow any amp with overdrives right across the range to higher gain," while offering "some of that elusive D-flavour and mojo."4 On That Pedal Show, Mick found it did the Dumble sound as well as anything he had heard in that comparison, though it was not the one that ended up on his own board.9

Questions

Does the J Rockett Dude run on a battery?

Yes. MusicRadar's review notes that The Dude takes a nine-volt adaptor but will also run off batteries, with battery access behind four small screws on the enclosure, so you need to be careful when swapping them. The maker's current spec lists a 9 volt negative tip adapter with a 5.5mm x 2.1mm jack as the power connection.

What is the difference between The Dude V1 and V2?

The V2 model introduced a noiseless on/off switch, and Delicious Audio reports that The Dude V2 has a less aggressive volume control than the original. Otherwise both versions keep the same four controls, Level, Ratio, Treble and Deep, and the same Dumble Overdrive Special design goal.

Is The Dude a boost or an overdrive?

It is both. Premier Guitar's launch announcement described it as an OD/Boost pedal that can act as a clean boost, produce classic Dumble sounds, and churn out smooth high gain tones. The Ratio knob blends the overdriven signal with the clean signal, so it can sit anywhere from boost to full overdrive.

What power supply does the J Rockett Dude need?

A 9 volt DC supply with negative tip (standard negative tip and positive sleeve) feeding a 5.5mm x 2.1mm jack, which is the common center-negative pedal standard, so most pedalboard power supplies work. It can also run on an internal battery.
